Wedding: Tasmania: James + Lucy

Wedding: Hobart: Tarraleah

There's Australian beauty and then there's Tasmanian beauty. Despite being a short distance from the mainland, Tasmania offers a vastly different landscape and light. This was the setting for James and Lucy's destination wedding.

In many ways it was easy to photograph this wedding. It was a grand, black-tie affair. James is an investment banker and Lucy the marketing manager for a major French fashion house. Guests came from all over the world to celebrate with the power-couple. The entire town of Tarraleah was hired. Photos were at the private estate of the Governor of Tasmania. There was even a helicopter. No detail was left unattended.

But the heart of this wedding lay in its unexpected moments. As the bride walked down the aisle of her family's ancestral church, both she and the groom were crying. As James spoke of his horror at witnessing Lucy's near fatal accident, the lump in his throat stilled the room. Finally, and this speaks both to how brave and nostalgic James must be, he got up on stage in front of the entire room and surprised Lucy with a moving (if completely out of tune) rendition of When you were sweet sixteen.

There wasn't a dry eye in the hall.
