I have often annoyed family and friends by getting lost in bookstores for hours, literally hours. The older the books the better. If I was getting married in New York, Strand Books Rare Book Room would be on my shortlist. For this profile I spoke to Tony Walker, Strand Manager.

Tell us about your venue. How long have you been holding weddings and how many weddings do you hold per year?

Strand has been holding weddings in the Rare Book room since 2014. We currently have about 20 weddings per year.

Why should a couple consider your venue over other venues?

A couple should consider the Rare Book Room because of its beauty. The room holds thousands of rare books in a variety of genres, ages and price ranges. Guests may also browse and handle the books during an event.

What’s the first thing brides usually ask when they come and see you?

Most brides ask what the capacity of the space is. We are able to answer any questions that arise.

What size functions can you hold/host?

The Rare Book Room is a versatile space to accommodate both intimate gatherings and large parties. 75% of the furniture can be reconfigured or completely removed to accommodate a variety of guest counts. Maximum capacity for the space is 175 guests.

Can couples bring in their own caterer? What about alcohol?

Couples must use a Strand approved caterer for their event. Exceptions may be made dependent on circumstances. Alcohol may be served at any event that is catered by a Strand approved caterer.

Can the ceremony be held at your venue?

Yes, a ceremony surrounded by beautiful, rare books can be held at our venue.

Are the couple free to decorate as they like?

Couples are able to decorate in a variety of ways in the Rare Book Room. Nothing may be hung using nails and no open flame is permitted in the room at any time. All decorations are subject to approval by the Strand Events Coordinator.

If your venue is outdoors is there a backup space in case of rain?

The Rare Book Room is an indoor venue.

ould you give our readers some indication of the range of prices for hiring your venue? Renting the Rare Book Room ranges from $1,000.00 to $3,000.00 per hour depending on the time of day.

How early do couples need to book you?

Strand also holds its own world class book events in the Rare Book Room so dates go very quickly. A couple should contact us at least 4-6 months before their event if possible.

What time at night can weddings stay at your venue?

The venue is open until 2AM, though small additional costs may apply for any event lasting after midnight.

Do you offer accommodation options?

The Rare Book Room currently partners with the Hyatt Union Square for all accommodation needs. The hotel is located within the same block as the Strand Bookstore.

What other (if any) wedding services do you offer?

The venue only provides services such as alternate lighting options, tables, chairs and audio/ video equipment at an extra charge. Our catering, floral, photography, musician, and event planning partners can provide all other services to make your wedding a dream come true.
