New York Wedding Blog: Wedding Venues

For this profile I spoke to Lindsey Hamma, Events Manager at The Foundry.

Tell us about your venue. How long have you been holding weddings and how many weddings do you hold per year?

The Foundry is a 19th Century building that housed The Albra Metal Foundry (their logo is still visible on the corner of the building at 9th Street and 43rd Avenue). By 1906, it was one of several steel foundries in the Long Island City area that catered to the needs of New York City’s riverfront manufacturers. Once restored and renovated the space to reflect its original industrial character, we began hosting events in 2001. We're proud to say we are the only foundry in the area still standing today. We host about 100 weddings a year and are happy to also host a multitude of other events such as corporate events, social engagements and film and  photography.

Why should a couple consider your venue over other venues?

What makes us stand out over other venues is our abundant outdoor space and flexibility amongst so many different variations and layouts no two weddings feel the same. While our couples begin with the Foundry Main Space and accompanying Courtyard they also have the option to add on four additional spaces.

What’s the first thing couples usually ask when they come and see you?

Aside from the regular questions like our capacity and availability the single most common question is about our ivy!

The Foundry can accommodate up to 180 guests for cocktails or 125-140 guests for a dinner (this also includes the dance floor or up to 140 with dancing in a separate area). Outside in the The Courtyard, we can accommodate up to 165 guests for a seated dinner and couples have the option of adding on a weather plan tent.

The ivy begins to blossom around mid-April and will thrive well into October. At that point certain vines will begin to change colors, mostly yellow and some red. The leaves begin to thin and are usually gone by mid-November.

What size functions can you hold/host?

We host events up to 180 for a cocktail style event or 165 for a seated dinner  in the Courtyard vs 140 for clients who host dinner inside the Foundry main space.

If relevant, can couples bring in their own caterer? What about alcohol?

We have a list of 40 caterers to choose from. Here is a link to our full list and they would handle beverages as well: http://www.thefoundry.info/vendors-we-love-1

Can the ceremony be held at your venue?

Yes, absolutely. We love to host a ceremony on site and the three most popular areas based on a client's guest count are the Foundry Main Space, the Courtyard or Greenhouse.

Are the couples free to decorate as they like?

Yes, we love to see what couples come up with! Of course we have a couple of rules (i.e.: don't drill into our walls) set in place to protect the building but we are open to a lot of idea and have ample beams to hang items from.

If your venue is outdoors is there a backup space in case of rain?

The Foundry can arrange for a tent to be rented and on standby in case of inclement weather.

Could you give our readers some indication of the range of prices for hiring your venue?

For the Foundry Main Space and accompanying Courtyard rates fluctuate between $8,000-$14,000 depending on the day of the week and the time of the year. Optional spaces (such as the Greenhouse) can be added for a flat rate.

How early do couples need to book you?

We say that a couple should book with a venue once they know they have a particular date in mind. I'd say our couples are booking with us about a year to a year and a half in advance.

What time at night can weddings stay at your venue?

We have a guest curfew of 12:30am. If a client wishes to extend or host an after party they can and it would just adjust the rental rate.

Do you offer accommodation options?

We don't have anywhere to stay on site but we have wonderful relationships with local hotels.

How can people get in contact with you?

We can be reached at 718.786.7776 or you can check our our website at www.thefoundry.info or on Instagram @TheFoundryLIC
