Sydney Wedding Blog: Wedding Venues

With history, stunning views, privacy and a water side feel, Gunners' Barracks must surely be high on any couples list for their Sydney wedding. For this profile I spoke to Sophie Noble, Director of Sales and Events.

Tell us about your venue. How long have you been holding weddings and how many weddings do you hold per year?

Gunners’ Barracks, is one of Sydney’s most loved wedding venues, nestled within bushland at Georges Head, Mosman and boasting some of Sydney’s most spectacular harbour views. Part of the Grand Pacific Group venue collection, the venue has been operating since 2005 and hosts on average 220 weddings a year.

Head Chef Nathan Darling heads a team of highly sought after industry professionals.  Combining this with exceptional restaurant-trained wait staff, Gunners’ Barracks delivers a world class dining experience.

Gunners’ Barracks was constructed in 1873 and is of national significance as one of the finest examples in Sydney of a nineteenth-century fortified building with its stone quarried locally.  Originally the site included two parallel buildings.  The second story was added to the rear block in 1891 and the two buildings were also connected at a later date.  The barracks were excavated into the cliff side and linked by tunnels to the adjacent fortifications forming part of part of a network of fortifications that were established to protect Sydney Harbour from attack.

The natural and cultural heritage of this former defence site offers a variety of unique photographic opportunities with historic sandstone backdrops or magnificent harbour scenery.

Why should a couple consider your venue over other venues?

Gunners’ Barracks presents the perfect wedding venue solution, allowing couples to be married onsite in one of three ceremony locations, followed by pre-dinner drinks & canapes on the Harbour Terrace, showcasing 180 degree Harbour Views, whilst the couple take photos at some of the most unique waterside locations in Sydney, which are all within walking distance of the venue! Guests are then welcomed into the Main Dining Room for dinner underneath crystal Waterford chandeliers. Following dinner, guests are lead to beneath a fairy light canopy within the venue Sandstone Courtyard to dance the night away beneath the stars!

What’s the first thing brides usually ask when they come and see you?

Couples always ask if the venue is exclusively for them! They cannot believe the private exclusion – and this is one of the main features of Gunners’ Barracks, the entire space is yours to enjoy throughout the night, you do not have to share with anybody, ensuring you and your guests have the ultimate privacy, that your special day deserves.

Couples are also very impressed with our staff ratio of 1-15 (well above the industry average of 1-25).

More so, every couple, as they should, always ask about the food! Everything at Gunners’ Barracks is made fresh onsite from the bread through to the ice cream and thus this allows us to work with couples to customise their menu to best suit their needs and requirements. Couples also have the opportunity to come in for a menu sampling prior to their wedding day, should they wish, to ensure the menu is exactly has they envisaged.

What size functions can you hold/host?

Gunners’ Barracks can host seated events up to 130 guests & cocktail functions of up to 180.

If relevant, can couples bring in their own caterer? What about alcohol?

Couples are most welcome to bring Kosher catering if required, as this is not something Gunners’ Barracks can provide.

You are also most welcome to BYO all the alcohol for your event.

Can the ceremony be held at your venue?

Yes! Gunners’ Barracks presents three unique ceremony locations to consider. The Sandstone Courtyard, Harbour View Lawn with magnificent views of Chowder Bay or George’s Heights Lookout which oversees the greater Harbour and city skyline.

Are the couple free to decorate as they like?

Yes, couples are  most welcome to bring all their own decorations to suit their style, theme and colour palette. Being a heritage venue, couples are not able to affix anything to the walls or use rice, confetti or rose petals.

If your venue is outdoors is there a backup space in case of rain?

Gunners’ Barracks has a backup options for all elements of the evening. In the case of wet weather, couples can host their ceremony on the enclosed Harbour Terrace with panoramic views and for dancing, this can occur on a parquetry dance floor within the venues formal drawing room, also adored with Waterford crystal chandeliers.

How early do couples need to book you?

We are always available to assist clients with wedding bookings. If couples are however set on a particular day of week or date, they should book with haste, as we do only offer exclusive higher, and once the venue is secured for a specific date, we are unable to further assist other couples.
