New York Wedding Blog: Wedding Venues

Tell us about your venue. How long have you been holding weddings and how many weddings do you hold per year?

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is located at Pier 86 on the Hudson River, at the intersection of 46th Street and 12th Avenue. The Museum offers a one-of-a-kind New York experience with historical ambiance, as well as idyllic views of the city skyline, New Jersey and the Hudson River. Every year, we host a number of social events at the Museum, including weddings, vow renewals and engagements.

Why should a couple consider your venue over other venues?

The Museum is truly a departure from the ordinary. Here couples will find a space both uniquely historical and modern that will accommodate their event’s needs. The ship provides a picturesque backdrop and holds many wonders, including historical and cultural artifacts. It has a variety of event spaces, both indoor and outdoor, allowing a couple to really tailor the experience to their personal needs. Our professional and experienced event staff will assist them throughout all stages of the event process, from initial planning and managing the actual event to a seamless breakdown and load-out.

What’s the first thing couples usually ask when they come and see you?

Every couple has different needs. We receive a variety of questions from clients about booking our venue for their wedding. We are dedicated to helping them navigate our services and processes, and we provide all the information they need on a case-by-case basis.

What size functions can you hold/host?

We have 12 different spaces for our clients to choose from for their event. For weddings, we can accommodate 50–900 guests comfortably. The most popular spaces for weddings are the flight deck, Great Hall and hangar 3. Typically, the ceremony is held on the flight deck with the city skyline as the backdrop, followed by cocktails. After the ceremony, clients generally choose to hold dinner and dancing in hangar 3 or the Great Hall, depending on guest count. All spaces are very versatile and can be arranged according to the client's personal preference.

Can couples bring in their own caterer? What about alcohol?

Here at the Intrepid Museum, we use our exclusive catering vendor Catering by Restaurant Associates (CxRA). Part of the acclaimed Restaurant Associates family, CxRA is a custom caterer devoted to creating extraordinary events. Its use of local and seasonal ingredients, as well as its dedicated central catering kitchen, creates exceptional events with social impact, not an environmental one. CxRA has a diverse range of food and beverage options and will work with couples one-on-one to develop a menu that meets their desires.

Can the ceremony be held at your venue?

Yes! Typically ceremonies are held in the Great Hall or on the flight deck.

Are the couple free to decorate as they like?

Yes, as long as the décor follows the Museum’s rules and regulations. Couples need to obtain approval from the Museum to assure no damage is done to its exhibits.

If your venue is outdoors is there a backup space in case of rain?

Yes. Our venue includes both indoor and outdoor spaces, so our dedicated event staff will develop a rain plan for any event.

Could you give our readers some indication of the range of prices for hiring your venue?

Prices vary by space and size of party.

How early do couples need to book you?

We ask that couples book our space at least six months in advance. However, we are able to be flexible with last-minute bookings, depending on availability.

What time at night can weddings stay at your venue?

We do not have an event curfew.

Do you offer accommodation options?

We are happy to provide suggestions for luxury, off-site accommodations within walking distance of our venue.

What other (if any) wedding services do you offer?

With any wedding booking, we will provide preparation spaces for the bridal party to use to get ready. Because of our unique space and location, we can accommodate one-of-a-kind photo opportunities. In the past, we have done photo shoots next to our aircraft or under the space shuttle. We also offer custom digital signage to personalize or brand the wedding. If couples are looking for a little more engagement for their guests, we offer knowledgeable tour guides and interactive flight simulators for a fun-filled evening.
